There are many reasons why people all over the globe seek to rebuild their lives in a different country. Many of our studio members fled persecution or human rights violations, torture, armed conflicts and other crises or violence, or have been targeted just because of who they are or what they do or believe.

The experience of displacement and survival is one of the most profound and painful experiences that humanity faces. Our studio members exist in a state of ambiguity and disorientation accompanied by immense uncertainty and uprootedness.

In Between Spaces exist beyond the borders of identity, ownership, bureaucracy and human relations where people seek protection, safety and better lives. This continually evolving sense of belonging is where the human spirit shows its longing and creativity, expressed in a wide-ranging collection of artworks: landscapes, figures and abstractions.

New Art Studio is a creative therapeutic community for asylum seekers and refugees. Many of its members have never made art before joining the studio, while some have been prosecuted because of their art. The studio provides a space of solidarity and freedom of imagination, for thinking and feeling—painting not only the traumas of the past but also dreaming of new ways of being.
