Our Roots

New Art Studio was founded by art psychotherapists Tania Kaczynski and Jon Martyn in 2014. The studio first evolved from another project that both Tania and Jon worked together on in 2009, the Open Art Studio at Freedom from Torture. When this project was sadly ended, the pair decided to set up New Art Studio to continue their art therapy work with London’s refugees and asylum seekers.

Over the years, New Art Studio has weathered many storms, but we have never stopped supporting our vulnerable members. Even when we were left with no studio, we continued to run as a mobile group, hopping between Finsbury Park and various cafés across North London. As long as we have art materials and people that need us, we will be here.

Thankfully, we now have a home at Islington Arts Factory. Islington Arts Factory is a non-profit community arts venue, which provides a place of safety and stability for members within a wider arts community. We love their ethos and we are proud to be a part of the community they have fostered. Our members are referred to us by the local council, other charitable organisations and word of mouth.

Tania Kaczynski, director & lead art therapist: After completing a BA in ceramic design, Tania qualified in MA Art Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths in 1994. Since then she has consistently practiced Art Psychotherapy, with both adults and children, and as a clinical supervisor.  Tania has worked with asylum seekers and refugees for over 10 years. Throughout her career, with adult mental health at the Studio Upstairs (a therapeutic arts community) and with asylum seekers and refugees, she has curated numerous exhibitions of artwork by her clients throughout London. She believes that showing artwork is a vital component of art psychotherapy. Tania continues with her own ceramic practice…in her spare time!

Jon Martyn, Trustee: Jon has recently moved out of London for pastures anew, so he is no longer a regular presence at the studio. However, we are delighted that he is able to continue supporting our work as a member of our Board of Trustees!
